For the 13th consecutive year, the Fern Creek High School JROTC Lady Leathernecks Drill Team has been named National Champions at the national meet in Daytona Beach, Florida. The men's Leatherneck Drill Team did exceptionally well also, earning an overall 5th place in a highly competitive division.
The Drill Teams will be welcomed back to school at a special rally of fellow cadets and family members on Wednesday, May 9 at approximately 1:30 p.m. (or as soon as their bus arrives) in the Alumni Auditorium at Fern Creek High School.
The Ladies took First Place in three of the five Categories: Color Guard, IDR Platoon, and Inspection. They took second in Platoon Exhibition and Third in Squad Exhibition. Lady Leatherneck Commander Cadet Nena Young won the Commanders Trophy for best IDR (Individual Drill Routine) Platoon Commander.
The men finished fifth in Squad Exhibition and Fifth in Platoon Exhibition despite having to use an alternate in Squad and redoing the entire Platoon Sequence overnight due to an injured teammate. They took a Third Place in IDR Platoon with Team Captain Cadet William Thompson winning the Commander's Trophy for best IDR Platoon Commander.
The Drill Teams, and the Fern Creek Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, are under the command of Master Gunnery Sergeant Frank Herbert and Lt. Colonel Roger Angel.

Dear Parents/Guardians:
I want to let you know that everyone at Fern Creek High School is safe and we are conducting school as usual. We were informed earlier today by Metro Police of an anonymous call reporting a bomb threat. To ensure the students' safety, we immediately secured the building and Metro Police and JCPS Security arrived within minutes to assist. After a thorough inspection of the building and campus by the K-9 unit, it was determined to be a false report and we were given the all-clear to proceed with normal activities.
Our primary goal at Fern Creek High is to provide a safe learning environment for our students and staff. I am very proud of the way our students conducted themselves. District Personnel and Louisville Metro Police complimented their behavior throughout the entire process.
Please impress upon your child the importance of conveying information to staff rather than other students, so we can take appropriate action and not have widespread, unfounded rumors. If you should have any questions, please call 485-8251.
Sincerely,
Houston Barber, Ph. D

Classic Cinema at the Creek, a student-run movie series open to the public, will show classic movies in the newly-renovated Alumni Auditorium at Fern Creek Traditional High School most Thursdays. The series premieres on Thursday, March 15, 2012 with showings of Annie Hall at 3:00 p.m., Bringing up Baby at 5:00 p.m. and Casablanca at 7:00 p.m. The Classic Cinema at the Creek screenings are free and open to the public. A donation to the Fern Creek Alumni Scholarship Fund is requested. A concession stand will be open with proceeds going to student groups. “As a Communications, Media and the Arts School, this is a natural fit,” said Brian Miller, the sponsor of the Classic Cinema Club. “Our students already run a radio station, so a movie theatre makes sense, especially in our beautiful new Alumni Auditorium. With a brand new sound and projection system, this is a wonderful place to enjoy a classic movie.” The schedule and themes for the rest of the spring semester includes films by Alfred Hitchcock (Rear Window, Vertigo, North by Northwest), musicals (West Side Story, My Fair Lady), romantic adventures on the water (The African Queen, Titanic), westerns (High Noon, The Wild Bunch, Unforgiven), science fiction (E.T., Star Wars, 2001: A Space Odyssey), unruly animals (The Birds, King Kong, Jaws), politics (All the King’s Men, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, All the President’s Men), coming of age (American Graffiti, Diner, The Graduate) and D-Day (The Longest Day, Saving Private Ryan). Dear Parents and Guardians:
This letter is a follow up to our communication on Friday regarding a situation that had occurred at our school. I want to again make sure that you have the facts and dispel any rumors you may have heard. Please be assured that the safety and well being of your child is always foremost in everything we do.
Students began spreading a false rumor about a weapon possibly being brought to school. That information was relayed to metro police before it was relayed to the school. When we were notified, our school resource office, security and the administration responded immediately. The student in question had left school and was off school grounds. K-9 units searched inside the school and outside and no weapons were found. The student was also detained and after a full investigation, we were unable to substantiate any allegations.
We are all concerned about school safety; however, it is critical that your child understands the importance of conveying any rumors or tips to school staff members rather than to other students, and that they understand the importance of dealing with facts rather than gossip. This will enable us to take appropriate action and to avoid widespread unfounded rumors and major disruption to the instructional day as occurred on Friday.
Thank you to all of you who have called or written to express your support of our handling of this situation. I also want to commend our outstanding staff and students for their immediate and professional response. Our emergency plan was in place and everyone cooperated. If you have any further questions about this situation, please do not hesitate to call us at 485-8251. Again, thank you for your support of Fern Creek High School.
Sincerely,
Houston Barber, Ph. D

The Fern Creek Film Club, the Louisville Film Society, and KET are teaming up for the second season of the Community Cinema series. This year’s first screening is the one-hour documentary Reel Injun on Thursday, October 28, at 6:00 pm. in the high school’s auditorium. The film, which is free and open to the public, is part of a monthly Community Cinema offering by the Independent Lens series on PBS. The free film series will continue with a different film each month at the school.
A group of Louisville Film Society and Fern Creek Film Club members will stage a panel discussion about the film after the screenings. Along with these two groups, KET is sponsoring the local Community Cinema screenings.
Reel Injun: On the Trail of the American Indian is an entertaining trip through the evolution of North American Native people ("The Indians") as portrayed in famous Hollywood movies from the silent era to today. Jim Jarmusch, Clint Eastwood, Graham Greene, John Trudell, and others provide insights into the often demeaning and occasionally hilariously absurd stereotypes perpetuated on the big screen through Hollywood's history.
Fern Creek Traditional High School is located at 9115 Fern Creek Road. The auditorium is located at the north end of the school and is entered at the top of the round steps. For more information, call 502-485-6362.
